Creating a Social Justice Mindset: Incorporating Diversity, Inclusion, and Social Justice into all Aspects of Collections Work at MIT Libraries
Academic librarians are increasingly embracing diversity, inclusion, and social justice as values essential to our profession. The MIT Libraries has made a commitment to promoting the values of diversity, inclusion and social justice throughout the entire organization, and has sponsored a task force of the Collections Directorate to identify opportunities for archives, cataloging, acquisitions, preservation, and collections strategy staff to promote diversity, inclusion, and social justice in all aspects of library collections work. Over the course of eight months, the task force explored the topic philosophically and pragmatically. In our final report, we emphasized issues of economic justice, systems of oppression and privilege based on race, religion, gender expression, sexual orientation, class, and ability that place groups at an advantage over others; and provided definitions of “diversity,” “inclusion,” and “social justice.” The recommendations suggest ways in which the Collections Directorate staff can disrupt these systems of privilege and oppression with specific regard to the scholarly publishing and academic library marketplace, representation of marginalized perspectives, community inclusion and outreach, and building organizational infrastructure. This poster presents the task force\u27s recommendations and will provide conference attendees with concrete examples of how collections staff can demonstrate a commitment to these values in the course of their daily work
Effects of alcohol on central and peripheral visual fields
Tunnel vtswn ts a phenomenon that has often been attributed to alcohol intoxication. Past studies report conflicting results regarding the extent of visual field loss due to alcohol. This study attempted to resolve the conflicts in the literature and to determine if in fact peripheral visual field constrictions do occur. A population of 17 subjects, each acting as his own control participated in the clinical trials. Visual fields using the Humphrey Field Analyzer were run on each subject .before alcohol ingestion and shortly after reaching a BAC (blood alcohol concentration) of .08-.13, as measured by breath analysis. Results indicated a statistically significant increase (p=.013) in peripheral points missed. However, losses were random, not constrictive, and if mean losses were examined, the results were not clinically significant. While visual field changes did occur, the phenomenon of tunnel vision was not elicited
Time to Stand Up for Female Vets: Improving Access to Vegerans Administration Health Services for Female Veterans who Experience Military Sexual Trauma
Military Sexual Trauma (MST), is defined as sexual assault and/or sexual harassment experienced while serving in the United States military. The process of obtaining Department of Veterans Affairs (VA) benefits are difficult for individuals that suffer from MST. MST survivors are faced with delays and numerous barriers in accessing services, including discrimination in seeking compensation. Statistical data from the Department of Defense (DOD) is reviewed highlighting the high rates of sexual assault in the military and addresses concerns about the long-term implications for survivors of MST.
Many female veteran survivors of MST are struggling to access needed services covered by the VA. Policy recommendations are provided for addressing the unique needs related to survivors of MST, helps to under-stand how female veterans interact with the current VA system, and identifies areas for improvement. These are significant findings for policy makers and veteran advocates concerned about the prevalence of MST.
Legislative reform recommendations include enacting the Ruth Moore Act to effectively and efficiently address the unique needs of female veterans who experience MST and the barriers they face in accessing VA services and benefits. Encouraging the VA to adapt policies that create a safer and more supportive environment for survivors of MST is also recommended
